Our perfect itinerary! Two weeks plus 2 travel days.

Fly to Rome.  Spend 2 days exploring this magical city, acclimate to the time change and nap in the afternoon heat.  Rome comes alive at 9:00 pm.  Stroll the piazza's, visit the antiquities, don't forget the Borghese museum (more later), and the fantastic food.  I challenge you to find a bad restaurant in Italy.

Then explore Umbria and Tuscany for 1 week, specifically Orvieto and surrounding Civita, Siena, Montepulciano, and San Gimignano.  Then head over to Orbetello by car or train and the 1 hour crossing to Giglio.

Now you can escape the heat and crowds with 1 week of relaxing, swimming, reading, hiking and eating.  Each day choose a different cove to swim at.  Visit Costello, the medieval village atop the mountain.

Then back to Rome for your return flight.  Stay overnight in Rome before your departure.

Where to shop on Giglio!

There is no shopping on Giglio.  If you wish to purchase fine jewelry, watches, or designer clothing, Giglio is not for you.  However, if you want breakfast and lunch items, there is a little market 3 doors from the Information Office behind the main row of buildings.  Kika will show you where.

Planes, trains, buses, boats.  An Italian adventure.

Most Americans will be intimidated by traveling the local routes to rural Italy.  But with a few helpful details, it's a breeze.  And fun.

1) From FCO (Fiumocino Airport) to Rome Central - we recommend the train.  Cost is approximately Euro 16.  If there are more than two people than a taxi is more efficient.  Fixed price is Euro 45.  Do not get sidetracked by the unlicensed drivers at the airport.  Go to the taxi stand on the street and get in line.  Easy and fast.

2) Stay in the central section of Rome - we recommend the Hotel San Carlo - centrally located and reasonably priced.

3) Upon departure, take a taxi to Termini, the central train station.  An experience.  Use the kiosk (press English) and purchase a ticket from Termini to Orbetello - it is a stop on the Pisa line.  I will provide a website for checking the train schedule, but they run approximately every hour.

4) Two hours later you are in Orbetello.  The bus to Porto Santa Stefano usually arrives within 40 minutes.  You can ask in the cafe for a taxi.  Bus is 2 Euro, taxi is approximately 30 Euro.

5) Purchase ferry tickets across the street from the water.  There are two vessels - Toremar and Margiglio.  Either one - they are equivalent.  Cost approximately Euro 12.  Do not purchase round trip because you do not know what time you wish to return - it may be on the other ferry line.

The numbered paragraphs above represent a quick overview.  Detailed, step-by-step instructions will be provided with your travel itinerary.  We can give you hotel information - suggestions, and travel directions to most villages/cities in Tuscany and northern Italy, including the lake region and Milan.
